I learned in School of Ministry to pray before you read the Scriptures and ask Holy Spirit what he wants you to see. (Admittedly, I don’t always do it). #fail
Like other days, I had started mindlessly reading this morning when I remembered to stop and ask. Suddenly, a verse came to life and that after years of reading, I now saw in new light.
Proverbs 17:22 “A cheerful heart is good medicine.”
I always thought this verse referred to laughing so my goal was to find things to make me laugh. Have you noticed it seems hard these days to find good, clean funny? So hard these days that one may resort to flicking pistachio shells at husbands open mouth while he is napping. (side note: this isn’t always appreciated by both parties lol).
I am always in search of a good laugh but sometimes laughter seems evasive So how am I going to take my medicine? Problem is, following my interpretation of this verse meant I was seeking influence from the outside -in.
So with new eyes, I saw realize this verse DOESN’T say laughter. It says ” a cheerful heart”. It refers to a condition of health, not a fleeting circumstance or event. A cheerful heart is what we carry INSIDE. A joyful heart can be found in someone with peace and gratitude , who knows they are loved. The revelation? The “medicine” comes from the inside-out. Its not something we “take”; it’s something grown when we spend time basking in the grace and love God has for us. it’s not anything anyone or anything can steal from us.
Now…we TRULY can “see” , in the light, that a cheerful heart is possible every moment we think on the goodness of God and it will and can bring us continuous health and life! Amazing!!!
Blessings friends and family!
