Every Christmas, there is one scripture recited to us over and over. Do you think it’s used so often it loses it’s power? We hear it and say, “Yes, that’s niiiiiice.” And life goes on.
That’s what I did. So this year I decided to take a deeper look and open my dull ears.
Isaiah 9:6 says, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
And we all go, “Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww” and nodd in agreement.
But have you kept reading?
“Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.”
What in the world is the Lord Almighty so zealous about?
Have you ever seen “zeal” in action? If you HAVE, you would know it because it’s very hard to ignore a zealous person. KungFu Panda comes to my mind immediately. One of my favorite scenes is when Po (the panda) is caught on the top shelf stuffing his face with cookies in a perfect split. “What?” he asks with crumbs falling off his lips, “I eat when I’m upset!”
It’s memorable to me becuase I myself have found some creative ways to get my hands on some somtehing I really want: espeically FOOD! But I’m not sure I can say I’ve ever been so zealous about something that I’ve gone after it no matter what was in my way. How about you?
The New Oxford American Dictionary defines ZEAL as “great energy & enthusiasm in pursuit of an objective or ideal.” Right under it is the definition for a ZEALOT: “a person who is fanatical and uncompromising in pursuit of an ideal.” That’s when it hit me: God is a ZEALOT….for ME!
Yes, God LOVED so much that He sent His Son…the one and Only. God would see HIS IDEAL through and NOTHING would stop Him. NOTHING would get in His way to see to it that you and I had a way to Him and Him to us. He wanted to be close to the ones He LOVED so badly that He fanatically pursued us with great energy and enthusiasm!
Seems to me that love and zeal are inseparable. This leads to a challenging question for you and me: do you have the courage to stop and ask yourself how much zeal you show for the ones you love?
What do you think?
